Farr West Elementary School
is excited to announce the opportunity to have a choir for the 2022-2023 school year! We are
going to have so much FUN!!
This type of choir is not your regular everyday kind of choir. We implement props, costumes,
scenery, skits, instruments, solos, choreography, and even dancing for those that choose to. It’s
a SHOW CHOIR! Fantastic youth appropriate music is chosen, both fun and technical and will
cover most all the bases of interests and vibes giving each child an appreciation for the vast
cultures and genres that music offers. They will learn vocal technique, rhythm, basic
choreography, how to perform and be more confident in front of an audience and more! These
skills will carry them through their whole life in all aspects whether performing or not. The
affects of being in this type of choir is clear to me. Research shows children improve on all
levels. I have seen the results first hand….it changes peoples lives!

This environment is for learning! So if your student doesn’t know how to sing, to play
instruments, to talk in the mic, or choreography etc….then this is the right place for them! Or if
they have been trained in a performing skill for multiple years they will be able to fine tune their
experience with this opportunity. We work with all capacities. They get to choose if they
participate in anything extra beyond regular choir, like singing a duet or a speaking part in the
skit. There are no tryouts for regular choir… but there are some basic tryouts for those that
choose to participate in the extra parts. The child doesn’t need to prepare anything for the
tryouts. We will teach them what they need to do. Everyone that tries out gets an extra part
where they will thrive and grow. If they tryout for a special part, then they must agree and be
available to be there for the extra practices that happen on Wednesdays or Friday mornings.
Dance is primarily on Friday mornings and the speaking, small vocal groups, solos and
instruments are usually specified to rehearse when needed on Wednesday mornings. These
will start at a specified time indicated through Myconnect messaging.

TIME FRAME:
The choir has two sessions a year ….one in Winter and one in the Spring with an assembly and
multiple performances each session. Performance dates are listed below. Your student can
sign up for both sessions or just one. You will have to reregister for every session, it only takes
a moment to go to the registration tab on the schools website and do so and then pay the fee in
the office.

WHO CAN JOIN:
Choir is only for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students with some exceptions. If an adult is available
to help with choir behind the scenes at home or otherwise, then their 3rd grade student will be
allowed to join…or if the choir student has a 3rd grade sibling, then they can register as well.
Please contact me with questions about volunteering! We would love to have you on the team!

PRACTICES:
All practices for regular choir usually take place Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Practices
take place in the big gym beginning at 7:35 am till first school bell. Some practices might be on
other mornings, but normally just two practices a week. The choir practices might be cancelled
or added depending on need Please be on time! We go through material quickly so we don’t
want anyone to miss important info.

COMMINICATION:
I will announce through the choir Myconnect if there are any changes. I will also give important
info through those Myconnect messages. It is required to sign up with the Myconnect Choir QR
code in the registration so don’t forget!! This is primarily how I communicate with the parents.
You may also email me if you have questions or concerns.

in need of a scholarship, please contact the office.

ATTENDANCE:
Please consider only signing your student up if they can attend all practices and performances.
We cover material quickly. We don’t want them to get behind. If you have big events
scheduled on multiple choir dates that will take your student out of choir, this may make them
frustrated because they will be behind… you can see the confusion on their face when they’ve
missed something and it is difficult to try to catch them up! Illness is understood but please
email me indicating ANY absence or if you have questions. If your child is in another
club/organization that is school sponsored and will miss occasional partial practices, please
email me with those dates and their name. We will support the groups the school is trying to
implement. Please consider having your student eat breakfast before attending choir so they
don’t leave early to eat and don't miss anything. I will take role. They will need to check out
with me before leaving for any obligation.

GETTING TO KNOW THE DIRECTORS:
Hello! My Name is Connie Starks the Farr West Choir Director and I love everything Music!
Here’s a little about me. I have taught music at Lomond View Elementary for 8 years, Maria
Montessori for 5 years, North Ogden Elementary, Orion Junior High, and now Farr West
Elementary for 3 years. I have been performing literally all my life with dance, singing, drama
and all kinds of presentations! I have been trained in vocal performance, instruments,
choreography/dance, scenery/prop creation, costume creation, stage sound/editing, script
writing, and even in teaching special needs and behavior students! I have been learning so
much from all y’all and have appreciated the support and inspiration!!!

My co-director Jenna Gibson teaches 5th grade here at Farr West Elementary and she has
performed in many capacities as well. She is full of fun and is so good with the kids. They love
her!!

My assistant director Cammie Yorgeson is new to the group but not new to putting great shows
together! Very talented and creative! I’m looking forward to working with her.

COURSE……HAVE LOTS OF FUN!!!

COSTUME/APPAREL AND T-SHIRT:
-Sign up for t-shirt if needed indicating students size or mark if you already have one.. You will
need to pay for the t-shirt in the office. The cost is 6$. Usually we use the t-shirt during
assemblies and other performances. Dark pants/jeans with dark shoes are worn with the t-shirt.
It’s the same t-shirt we used last school year. We are encouraging the student to wear very
nice clothing for our big parent performances. This is not required but highly suggested.
Please look in the stores and their closet now if you can. If you do not have access to
something that is adequate please notify us. We might have some options. You are welcome to
contact us with questions.

SUGGESTED NICE APPAREL FOR BOYS: BLACK/DARK SLACKS PANTS, DARK SOCKS,
DARK SHOES. WHITE COLLARED BUTTON-UP SHIRT, SUSPENDERS, BOW TIE OR TIE.

SUGGESTED NICE APPAREL FOR GIRLS: THEIR PRETTIEST PARTY DRESS FOR
SPRING. PLEASE HAVE IT COVER THEIR SHOULDERS AND BACK AND AT LEAST GO TO
KNEES, LEGGINGS/OPAQUE TIGHTS TO COVER LEGS (BECAUSE BARE LEGS DON'T
LOOK AS GOOD ON STAGE), DRESS SHOES THEY CAN MOVE AROUND EASILY IN.
